Bangladesh Floods: Emergency Response
It is one of the worst floods in 122 years. 4.3 million people are in need of humanitarian aid, including 1.6 million children. There is an immediate need for food, water purification tablets, emergency hygiene kits, and shelter.
Airports are closed, and electricity has been cut off, due to victims dying of electrocution. Girls and women are not safe and there is an increased risk of water-borne diseases.
“Selim Miah, a farmer in Sylhet, said his home was washed away by the floods. All his 10-member family had at the moment, he said, was some puffed rice, molasses and a two-liter bottle of drinking water, which relief workers had provided to them. “I have never seen an extensive flood like this,” said Mr. Miah, 29. “When the flood water entered our living room, we put everything we had on top of the tin roof, including our cattle. But we could not stay like that because the water also reached the roof.” Saif Hasnat – Independent Reporter, told The New York Times.
There is an urgent need for rescue efforts, dry food packages, water purification tablets, oral saline, emergency hygiene kits, and shelter in the aftermath of the floods.

During emergencies, there’s no time to waste! Putting a humanitarian relief campaign together takes time that victims of disaster or conflict may not have. That’s why we often pledge or commit an amount before turning to you to raise funds.
When your donations go over the amount we pledged, we either return the excess into a General Emergency Response fund so that we can respond quickly for the next emergency, or we run a phase II of the campaign if the need is still urgent.
Your donations often cover what we spend, but not always. When we’re short, we use funds from the General Emergency Response pool.
In an emergency, we do our best to use all our funding for that particular emergency as soon as possible or in phases. We believe in transparency with our donors and value every penny you trust us with. Please reach out to us if you have any questions about where your donations go!
