Case Study: Bangladesh Wells

Nurul Haque, a tea stall owner, begins his day with a cup of tea brought by his granddaughter, which he cherishes as unmatched in taste. His son-in-law’s tragic death led his daughter and grandchildren to live with him, and Nurul strives to meet their demands despite limited income. Nurul and his family were using pond water for drinking and other purposes. The pond water doesn’t taste good and is also contaminated by microbes. The water becomes almost undrinkable after there is a flood. The pond is also far away from his house. Hence, his grandchildren always complain about being asked to fetch water from the pond. Her little grandchild always asked her grandfather to install a tube well like their other neighbors but he always smiled and never told her that he doesn’t have the money to install a tube well. The grandchildren often had to fetch water from the distant pond, especially challenging after flooding. Thanks to the Hand Pump Well project supported by Penny Appeal USA, a tube well was installed at Nurul’s house, bringing joy to his granddaughter and improving their water access and quality. Nurul believes after the installation of the tube well, his granddaughter has started to smile even more as she now has a tube well!

Gaza Winter Emergency: Fatema Selmy Abu Samaha

In Gaza, a significant portion of the population lives in impoverished conditions, with many residing in dilapidated homes. The region faces severe challenges during winter, exacerbated by damaged infrastructure and limited power supply. The story of Fatema Selmy Abu Samaha, a 75-year-old woman, sheds light on the harsh living conditions. Her 50-year-old house lacks proper ventilation and is prone to rain leakage, making it unsuitable for habitation. The roof, constructed with asbestos sheets, is in a deteriorating state. Despite these hardships, Fatema and her husband endure the weather, with rain causing them to seek refuge in the only part of the house that does not leak. Financial struggles add to their difficulties, as the husband, a former tailor with health issues, faces the challenges of aging without adequate support. The Social Affairs Department stopped providing assistance two years ago, leaving the couple to rely on sporadic financial help from their sons. Despite their hardships, Fatema expresses gratitude to Penny Appeal USA for providing winter essentials, including pillows and heavy blankets. The support came at a crucial time, preventing the couple from resorting to desperate measures like exchanging a bike for makeshift roof covers. While thankful for the assistance, they hope for continued support, especially for repairing their damaged roof.

Qurbani

Eid al-Adha is celebrated every year to commemorate the completion of Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The festival is observed through the sacrifice of animals, known as Qurbani, to honor the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son, Ismail (AS). Muslims are expected to sacrifice a healthy sheep, goat, buffalo, or camel during the holy Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah and distribute the meat to feed those in need. The act symbolizes a Muslim’s willingness to give up some of our own bounties in order to follow Allah’s commands, strengthen ties of friendship and help those who are in need.
