Why should I do my Qurbani with Penny Appeal USA?
As part of our multicultural identity, we are providing opportunities for Muslim communities to fulfill their religious obligations, share in the festivities of Eid Al-Adha, and provide joy for families in need this Qurbani/Udhiyah season.

For every $45 you donate, Penny Appeal USA will give your one-time qurbani of fresh meat to a needy family and ensure that they are enjoying their Eid Al-Adha.
What is the process like for the meat distribution?
We will make sure your sacrifice is carried out in the appropriate Islamic way and at the right time. Rest assured that we only use the healthiest Qurbani animals (sheep, goat or cow) and will deliver the fresh meat straight to those who need it the most.

Because delivering fresh meat on one occasion sustains these families for only a limited time, we are providing you with an opportunity to help assist them sustainably by providing them with resilient and durable livestock in the form of goats.
Goats: A sustainable option that keeps giving long after Eid al-Adha
Because delivering fresh meat on one occasion sustains these families for only a limited time, we are providing you with an opportunity to help assist them sustainably by providing them with resilient and durable livestock in the form of goats.

Goats can be bred and sold to help families put food on the table, provide critical income during emergencies, and pay for children’s education. By helping families develop a herd, you are helping these families ensure their long-term economic stability and help create stronger communities.

For $190, your gift of two adult goats (male and female) can help sustain a family beyond qurbani season, and build a brighter, more economically-secure future for tomorrow.
What is Qurbani?
The Prophet Mohammad was once asked: “What is Qurbani (or Udhiyah)?” The Prophet replied: “It is the tradition of your father Ibrahim. For every hair of the Qurbani (sacrifice) you receive a reward from God (Allah).” [Tirmidhi] According to Islamic tradition, the practice of sacrifice can be traced back to the Prophet Ibrahim who dreamt that God ordered him to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
What are the days and times of Qurbani?
The days of Qurbani are the 10th, 11th and 12th of the month of Dhul Hijjah in the Lunar calander. The Prophet Muhammad said: “The first thing that we do on the day of Eid is to perform the prayers. Then we go home and carry out our Qurbani (sacrifice). Thus whoever does those acts has conformed to our Tradition. And for those who slaughtered before it, then the meat is for the family members and not as an act of Qurbani.” You can order your Qurbani with Penny Appeal at any time before Eid.
Who has to give Qurbani and when?
Qurbani will be conducted by PA USA from the 10th of Dhull Hijja after the Eid Khutba till sunset on the 12th of Dhull Hijja (3 days). We stop taking donations at midnight ET of the 11th of Dhull Hijja. Accroding to the Hanafis, Qurbani is a waajib on every adult Muslim. However, the other schools of Islamic jurisprudence hold that it is a stressed sunnah.

Qurbani is made every year on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.

Qurbani can be undertaken on behalf of another person. It is permissible to make Qurbani in the name of the Prophet PBUH or any other deceased Muslim.
Which animals can be sacrificed?
A Qurbani is 1/7 of a large cattle (cow, ox, water buffalo) or camel, or a whole sheep or goat.
Can a sick or defected animal be offered as a sacrifice for Qurbani?
All animals for Qurbani must be in good health and free from any problems with their eyes, bones, and limbs. All our Qurbani animals are well cared for and thoroughly checked to ensure they are suitable.
How is the sacrifice performed?
To be accepted as Qurbani the animals must be slaughtered in the appropriate Islamic way (halal).

PA USA chooses Animals based on the Sunnah requirements:

  1. The animal should be chosen from healthy stock without any visible defect.
  2. Sheep and goats must be at least one year old and count as one share.
  3. Cattle must be at least two years old and count as 7 shares per animal.
  4. Camels must be at least five years old and count as 7 shares per animal.
  5. Animals should not be blinded, emaciated (sick), toothless or with broken limbs, preferably the ears and tail should be whole, but not a necessity.
What are the ethical requirements followed by Penny Appeal during the sacrifices?
  1. Sharpen the knife prior to putting the animal down for slaughter.
  2. Ensure that the correct size knife is used to slaughter the animal swiftly.
  3. Feed the animal, give the animal water and sooth the animal, show kindness and mercy to the animal.
  4. Ensure the area of slaughter is clean and clear of live animals.
  5. Make provision for Blood drainage, fly control and general cleanliness.
  6. Lead the animal to its slaughter humanely.
  7. Do not perform the slaughter process in front of other live animals.
  8. Maintain strict hygiene standards.
What is the method of the sacrifice?
According to Islamic Law, the legal purification of the flesh of animals requires that the following conditions be met:

  1. Making of the intention.
  2. It is preferable to make the throat of the animal face the Qibla (i.e. mustahab).
  3. Using a sharp knife swiftly cut the windpipe, the gullet and the two jugular veins, do not sever the entire head.
  4. Recite the name of God (tasmiyah), while slaughtering the animal (Preferably aloud).
  5. Skinning of the animal should only commence once the animal stops kicking.
  6. Keep meat and offal separate, clean and refrigerate as soon as possible.
Where is Penny Appeal performing the Qurbani sacrifices?
We are performing the Qurbanis mainly in Ethiopia and India, due to need. India has one of the largest populations of people in poverty, and Ethiopians recently went through the worst drought in 50 years where millions of livestock died as a result. Specific requests for Qurbani in other regions can be accommodated for those interested.

Our standard Qurbani price point is $45. These will be slaughtered in India (1 cow share) and Ethiopia (full goat). As well as distributing meat to locals in these two countries, we will also be distributing ready to eat meals by way of Food Pouches in Syria, Palestine and Pakistan. The meat from India and Ethiopia is being shipped to UAE, where it is cooked into curry meals and made into ready to eat meals with a life shelf of 1 year.
Can I choose which animal will be sacrificed for my Qurbani?
The availability of animals and local preferences determine which animals are slaughtered so it is not possible to specify.
How is the distribution of the sacrifice handled?
  1. Islamicaly it is preferred that the meat be divided into three parts. One part for own use, one part for relatives and one part for the poor and needy (preferably Muslims). As we are conducting qurbani on your behalf, we distribute 100% of the meat to those in need.
  2. We do not give meat and skin as payment for services rendered BUT we do give it as a gift.
  3. The skins are distributed to those in need of it.
  4. Give such meat as you would yourself like to receive and eat.
  5. Ensure that meat is given to reputable organizations for distribution to the needy.
  6. We ensure there is no waste.
Who receives the Qurbani meat?
All the fresh Qurbani meat benefits local poor and needy families, allowing them to share in the celebration of Eid. The Qurbani meat is either handed out so that families can make a hot nutritious meal for Eid, or our local teams organize community meals where we prepare and cook hot, nutritious meals for needy people in the area.
Can the Qurbani be made on behalf of another person?
Absolutely! You may give Qurbani on behalf of someone else, including a deceased friend or relative. You can also give Qurbani in the name of the Prophet, however, this must be done in addition to your own Qurbani.
Should I avoid anything in the 10 days before Eid Al-Adha?
During this time, Islamic tradition requires that you should not cut your hair or nails or remove parts of the skin.
What is the deadline for giving Qurbani?
We will stop taking Qurbani donations after the second day of Eid.
How many people are fed with each Qurbani?
One Qurbani will provide approximately 57 meals. A Qurbani is 1/7 of a large cattle or camel, or a whole sheep or goat.
Can I pay for Qurbani with my Zakat or Sadaqah?
No, Qurbani is a separate obligation.
Will I get a receipt or report?
We’ll send you a receipt to confirm your Qurbani but we are unable to provide notification when individual Qurbanis have been completed due to logistical complexity.
Is this donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Penny Appeal USA is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. To claim a donation as a deduction on your U.S. taxes, please keep your email donation receipt as your official record. We’ll send it to you upon successful completion of your donation.
