Resident Dinner: Standing Together Against Domestic Violence

By Shafaq Zia, Director of Programs, Penny Appeal USA

This evening was more than just a meal; it was a time to come together as a community, to share stories, offer support, and strengthen the bonds that make us resilient in the face of adversity.

As we know, domestic violence affects millions of people each year, leaving lasting scars on individuals, families, and communities. It’s crucial that we recognize the signs, offer help, and stand up against this pervasive issue.

On Sunday, August 25, 2024, staff and residents of our domestic violence shelter gather to share a meal and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all residents. This was our way of showing support and solidarity to the women that are in the shelter.  We wanted to bring a little bit of warmth and comfort to their day knowing that they come with a lot of trauma.  While going through domestic violence, one tends to think they are alone, but in reality they are not.  There are women that are suffering in silence and we want to be able to show our symbol of hope for the individuals that are facing these difficult and tough situations, because every situation is different.

The evening began with a warm welcome and Shelter Advocates who came out and shared insights on the impact of domestic violence and the importance of community and residential support. Following the talk, we shared a meal together, during which time encouraged the residents, we had open conversations and the sharing of personal experiences and thoughts on how we can all contribute to making a difference.

Throughout the evening, there were opportunities to learn about local resources, and ways to support those that are in the shelter. Whether through being there for someone who needs a listening ear or in another way.

We were so glad all residing in the shelter joined us for this meaningful evening of reflection and support. Together, we all created a space where everyone felt safe, valued, and empowered to live free from fear and harm.
